Butterfly 401 Table Tennis Racket Review

Butterfly have been one of the leading brands in table tennis since the 1950’s. You can expect quality equipment from them and in this review, we will give you our opinion on the Butterfly 401 table tennis racket.

Butterfly 401

The Butterfly 401 sells on Amazon.com for $38.99. The racket is made for beginner players who want to take improve on their spin generating and overall power.

The Review

The Butterfly 401 racket is assembled with Butterfly Yuki rubber on both sides. The Yuki rubbers offer extreme tackiness therefore generating great amounts of spin. The 2.1mm sponge layer will provide excellent speed and more springy feel on all shots. It also comes with a free racket cover that is recommended to be on while not playing as to keep the tackiness as high as possible.

Its 5-ply blade offers a larger sweet spot and consistent power throughout play. The racket was created as a starter with great value for money.

Our Opinion

The Butterfly 401‘s tacky surface does offer all the spin said above BUT the extremely tacky surface gathers dust quickly. If you get this racket we would recommend you use the cover while not playing. The dust that gathers on the rubbers greatly affects its tackiness so you’ll lose loads of spin unless you decide to clean it regularly.

While it is advertised to have good control, we disagree. We feel the Butterfly 401 leans more towards spin and power than control and playing with it will give this away in the first 5 minutes. Upon closer inspection, we also found that its handle is a bit smaller than normal.

Overall the Butterfly 401 is a decent starter racket that is able to generate the spin and power you will need but lacks in control. The tackiness also dissipates quickly unless properly cared for and can make it a higher maintenance racket.

Other Options

The Butterfly 401 is a beginner to an intermediate racket that we feel can help you generate lots of spin and decent power. At an aggressive price of $38.99 it would be a good pick if not for the high maintenance tacky rubbers on it and the low control it gives.

Palio Expert 2 Table Tennis Racket Review Image

Instead, we recommend getting the Palio Expert 2. It is our favorite beginner racket and will provide you more playing time as you advance while not having to swap rackets. It’s a bit more than the Butterfly 401 but (only $1.00) has greater quality rubbers and will give you a more well-rounded racket. Have a look at our review here.
