The Newgy Robo-Pong table tennis robots are currently available in four different models. The older-style 540, 1040, 1050, 2040 and 2050 robots have been replaced by the 1040+, 2040+, 2055 and 3050XL. Which one is right for you? Which one should you buy? In this article, I will complete a Newgy Robo-Pong comparison to help you to make that decision.

Newgy Industries is a US company that is well-known for producing high-quality table tennis robots. Newgy have their own factory in China and all their robots are exclusive to them – they aren’t sticking their logos on other Chinese robots. You can buy from Newgy robots from Megaspin and Amazon!

This post was updated in August 2019!

The Best Newgy Robo-Pong Robot

There are four Newgy Robo-Pong robots currently on sale (they seem to update their models quite regularly) and they vary significantly in price and features.

Newgy Robo-Pong 1040+ = $499

Newgy Robo-Pong 2040+ = $799

Newgy Robo-Pong 2055 = $999

Newgy Robo-Pong 3050XL = $1,999

The 1040+ and 2040+ are both “old-style” analogue table tennis robots. The 2055 is a newer digital version of the 2040+. It can remember drills and be connected to a computer. The 3050XL is the super fancy 2018 model that can be linked via Bluetooth to the Newgy app.

The 1040+ is a tabletop robot. The other three attach to the end of the table and are able to recycle the balls using the built-in net.

Which Newgy Robot Should I Buy?

I believe the answer to this question comes down to whether you are simply looking for a “cheap” robot or a “good” robot.

If you want a cheap robot, I would recommend the Robo-Pong 1040+.

If you’re looking for a “proper” robot, I would suggest the Robo-Pong 2055.

Unfortunately, the Robo-Pong 3050XL has really bad reviews online, so I would steer clear of this one!

I will now quickly run through my thoughts on all four Newgy Robo-Pong robots.

Newgy Robo-Pong 1040+

The Robo-Pong 1040+ is a fairly basic robot but it can do everything you would want from a simple machine.

It doesn’t recycle balls, and this might be a deal-breaker for some. But as far as table-top robots go, this one can hold over 200 balls – so you don’t have to spend all your time collecting and refilling the robot.

The best feature of the Robo Pong 1040+ is its price. It’s very reasonably priced at $499. And you know it’ll be a decent robot as Newgy have been selling these for decades!

Buy a Robo-Pong 1040+ for…

$499 from Megaspin.net

$499 from Amazon.com

Newgy Robo-Pong 2040+

The Robo-Pong 2040+ robot is able to recycle balls like a “proper” robot but it is still very basic in features. It’s an old-school analogue table tennis robot. The kind I used to use 20 years ago as a kid.

In fact, I think it might be exactly the same robot they had at my club 20 years ago!

The Robo-Pong 2040+ is identical to the Robo-Pong 1040+ in features, so you’re basically paying an extra $300 just to get the ball net and ball recycling! This doesn’t really make any sense to me.

If you’re interested in the Robo-Pong 2040+ you really should spend an extra $200 and get the 2055 model instead.

You could buy a Robo-Pong 2040+ for…

$799 from Megaspin.net

$911.10 from Amazon.com

But you should probably buy a Robo-Pong 2055 instead!

Newgy Robo-Pong 2055

The Robo-Pong 2055 is the updated version of the 2050+ and it’s exactly what you would expect from a $1,000 table tennis robot. A really solid robot that is able to do practically everything.

It has a built-in memory that can save your favourite exercises/drills. It has the net to recycle balls. And it can give you random drills.

The Robo-Pong 2055 is much more advanced than the Robo-Pong 2040+ and really doesn’t cost that much more. That’s why I like the Robo-Pong 2050 – $999 is actually very good value!

Buy a Robo-Pong 2055 for…

$999 from Megaspin.net

$999 from Amazon.com

Newgy Robo-Pong 3050XL

The Robo-Pong 3050XL sounds incredible. It was designed to be as close to playing with an actual human opponent as possible.

It’s got all the top-of-the-range features you would expect; two throw wheels, drills, advanced placement options, it can serve at you, it’s controlled via the Newgy app you download onto your phone/tablet, and it looks nicer than the other Newgy models.

The only problem is… the customer reviews are all awful!

When you’re spending $2,000 on a table tennis robot you expect all of the reviews to be glowing. But they aren’t.

From the sounds of it, the 3050XL is too clever for its own good. The technology can end up having a mind of its own, sending balls straight into the net, or randomly all over the place. And once it starts going funny, it’s not easy to fix!

You could buy a Robo-Pong 3050XL for…

$1,999 from Megaspin.net

£1,599 from Amazon.co.uk

Or on second thoughts. Maybe don’t! If you’re thinking about spending $2,000 on a table tennis robot you’d be much better off buying a Butterfly Amicus Prime.

Buy a Butterfly Amicus Prime for…

$2,179 from Megaspin.net

Conclusion

So there you have it. If you want to buy a Newgy Robo-Pong table tennis robot I would recommend either the 1040+ or the 2055. It really depends on your budget.

If you are looking to save money, go for the Robo-Pong 1040+.

If you want a modern, advanced robot at a great price, go for the Robo-Pong 2055.

And if you want a top-of-the-range table tennis robot, you should avoid Newgy altogether and buy a Butterfly Amicus Prime instead!

Butterfly have been one of the leading brands in table tennis since the 1950’s. You can expect quality equipment from them and in this review, we will give you our opinion on the Butterfly 401 table tennis racket.

Butterfly 401

The Butterfly 401 sells on Amazon.com for $38.99. The racket is made for beginner players who want to take improve on their spin generating and overall power.

The Review

Facts

The Butterfly 401 racket is assembled with Butterfly Yuki rubber on both sides. The Yuki rubbers offer extreme tackiness therefore generating great amounts of spin. The 2.1mm sponge layer will provide excellent speed and more springy feel on all shots. It also comes with a free racket cover that is recommended to be on while not playing as to keep the tackiness as high as possible.

Its 5-ply blade offers a larger sweet spot and consistent power throughout play. The racket was created as a starter with great value for money.

Our Opinion

The Butterfly 401‘s tacky surface does offer all the spin said above BUT the extremely tacky surface gathers dust quickly. If you get this racket we would recommend you use the cover while not playing. The dust that gathers on the rubbers greatly affects its tackiness so you’ll lose loads of spin unless you decide to clean it regularly.

While it is advertised to have good control, we disagree. We feel the Butterfly 401 leans more towards spin and power than control and playing with it will give this away in the first 5 minutes. Upon closer inspection, we also found that its handle is a bit smaller than normal.

Overall the Butterfly 401 is a decent starter racket that is able to generate the spin and power you will need but lacks in control. The tackiness also dissipates quickly unless properly cared for and can make it a higher maintenance racket.

Other Options

The Butterfly 401 is a beginner to an intermediate racket that we feel can help you generate lots of spin and decent power. At an aggressive price of $38.99 it would be a good pick if not for the high maintenance tacky rubbers on it and the low control it gives.

Instead, we recommend getting the Palio Expert 2. It is our favorite beginner racket and will provide you more playing time as you advance while not having to swap rackets. It’s a bit more than the Butterfly 401 but (only $1.00) has greater quality rubbers and will give you a more well-rounded racket. Have a look at our review here.

BUY THE RACKET

You can buy the Butterfly 401 from Amazon.

<del>Amazon.com</del>: The Butterfly 401 Advance is $38.99.

Amazon.com: The Palio Expert 2 is $39.99

Amazon.co.uk: The Palio Expert 2 is £29.99 (Roughly $36.00)

If you are in the market for a compact table tennis table then you might have come across the Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table sold on Amazon.com for $459.42 and Amazon.co.uk for £272.89. It is one of the best value for money tables out there!

In this post, we will be reviewing the Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table, weighing up the pros and cons of buying one and making a few other suggestions. It is our hope that after reading this, you will find it much easier to decide whether this table is right for you.

Before we get into the review, we recommend you check out Ben’s popular article, The Best Table Tennis Tables, for a comprehensive look at everything you should consider before buying a table tennis table.

Butterfly Compact 19 Table

In this review, we will be looking at the following factors…

Features

Price

Customer Satisfaction

Recommendations

The Final Word

1. Features

The Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table features a 19mm playing top surface, durable steel legs with wheels on each one for easy transport and a folding mechanism that makes the table 3 inches deep in storage. With the table splitting evenly in half and each piece weighing about 75 pounds it really lives up to the ‘Compact’ name.

As compared to the pictures we found the table to feel a lot more solid than it looks. This, and the 19mm matte table top finish, make the Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table a great choice for anyone looking for a table.https://www.youtube.com/embed/Qh3byTbd28A?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&autohide=2&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent

19mm Playing Surface

One of the strengths we found on the Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table is the table top. A 19mm playing surface gives you a good and consistent bounce throughout play. We still found the bounce to be on the slower side but in turn played with good height.

Ben talk’s a lot more about the importance of table thickness in his comprehensive article The Best Table Tennis Tables but, in short, competition tables are 25mm thick and you really need a table to be 19mm thick in order to get a “decent” bounce.

If you are just looking for a table to use for a bit of fun, recreational table tennis, and maybe a bit of training here and there, then getting the Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table would be a good choice. However, if you are used to playing on “proper” tables, or planning on learning how to play table tennis at a club or perhaps playing competitively, then a 19mm table might not meet your standards.

Storage Space

A lot of us have really wanted a table tennis table but don’t have the space in our closet or garage to store it. The Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table, then, would be the perfect choice. It takes minutes to set up or store and while stored takes up barely any space at all. Storage dimensions are 4 feet 8 inches high, 5 feet wide and 3 inches deep. Yes you read that right, 3 INCHES DEEP. We highly recommend this table for anyone who wants a decent table that they can keep away easily.

The Net

For being a mid-low range table the Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table comes with a decent net. No one likes a flimsy net made with low quality while playing and Butterfly have made sure this does not happen with this table. The rubber on the net clamp also helps prevent damage to the table when getting ready to play, which we found as a nice touch. The net is not a professional net but will give any recreational player a run for their money.

2. Price

The Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table a great value for money table, one we highly recommend.

In the US it is sold on Amazon.com for $459.42. The package includes the net and post set with free delivery to your home.

In the UK you get more value for your money as it is sold for £272.89 (Which roughly converts to $345.00).

3. Customer Satisfaction

On Amazon there has been nothing but good news about this table. Here are a few words from some of the customers…

“Beautifully Made! I felt really lucky to find this model and make a purchase.”

“THE TABLE- we love it, it’s easy to setup and put aside. And, I love that you don’t need much room to store it.”

“All I can say is this table rocks. Five minutes to assemble nice quality storage is so simple it folds right up and wheels away into a corner. I have owned 3-4 ping pong tables in my life this by far is the best. Don’t hesitate to buy.”

4. Recommendations

Is this the right table for you?

If you are looking for a good value table that takes up little space…

Then the Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table is the table for you! With a 19mm playing surface that offers great play and highly compact storage design we would highly recommend this table.

If you want a professional grade table that is “competition-ready”…

You’ll need to invest in a table with at least a 22mm playing surface – and that is going to be a fair bit more expensive.

Our favourite 22mm table, at a reasonable price, is the Butterfly Match 22 Rollaway. For roughly $850 you can buy a high-performance table from the leading brand in table tennis. That’s twice the price of the basic Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table, though.

5. The Final Word

The Butterfly Compact 19 Table Tennis Table is a great value for money table that will give you and your family lots of memories. If you want a well priced table that will keep the recreational player busy and can be stored easily this table is for you.

Buy on Amazon.com for $459.42

Buy on Amazon.co.uk for £272.89

The Newgy Robo-Pong 2055 table tennis robot is a brilliant tabletop robot that is simple to use and suitable for all levels of players. Here is our review.

Newgy Industries is a US company that is well-known for producing high-quality table tennis robots. Newgy has their own factory in China and all their robots are exclusive to them – they aren’t sticking their logos on other Chinese robots. You can buy from Newgy via Amazon.

Newgy Robo-Pong 2055

Here’s everything you need to know about the Newgy Robo-Pong 2055 table tennis robot…

The Newgy Robo-Pong 2055 looks identical to the Robo-Pong 2040, however, it has a lot more options. It is actually the same as the Robo-Pong 1050 in terms of features – although it has a different design and net to recycle balls.

The following description comes directly from Newgy…

The Robo-Pong 2055 – Newgy’s top-of-the-line table tennis robot for serious players. This revolutionary digital robot provides easy precision for ball speed, placement and frequency. Normal Mode gives you simple manual control over each function. Random Mode offers a more unpredictable and challenging experience to keep you on your toes! Drill Mode offers 64 pre-programmed drills for various playing levels and you can also create your own custom drills. Train strokes, footwork, transitions and other skills. Available spins: topspin, backspin, left sidespin, right sidespin, combination spin. Available shot selection: push, chop, serve, counter, lob, fast loop. Head angle adjustments: from low (serves) to high (lobs). The Robo-Pong 2055 includes Ball Thrower w/oscillation, Recycling Net System w/side nets to capture your returns and recycle the balls for non-stop action, Digital Control Panel (6 languages), 4 Dozen 40mm Robo-Balls, Set-Up DVD and Training Manual.

And here’s a promotional video produced by Newgy highlighting the features of this robot.

This is an advanced tabletop table tennis robot that is aimed at all levels of players looking to use a robot for developing stroke technique, footwork, training drills, and random play.

The Review

The digital Newgy Robo-Pong 2055 table tennis robot is a big step up from the analog Robo-Pong 2040.

For starters, it comes with 64 pre-programmed drills. This means that you can actually perform training exercises with your robot instead of simply working on the basic strokes. Modern advanced table tennis robots are increasing transitioning to this computer-style system with memory to remember patterns.

With the Robo-Pong 2055 (and 1050) you are able to hook up your robot to your computer and create drills that way. This is really cool. You are also able to save drills and share/swap them with other players.

The Robo-Pong 2055 also has a random setting that is not available in the cheaper models. This makes playing against the robot a lot more unpredictable and less “robotic”. The Robo-Pong 2055 can randomize the ball speed, frequency, and location. This is very good training for anticipation and adaptability.

The only downside to the Newgy robots is the fact that you can’t pre-program the robot to create different spins in one drill. It would need to be set on topspin or backspin. You can’t have it give you one backspin ball to open up and then a series of topspin balls to counter loop. Some of the more expensive robots, such as the Butterfly Amicus Professional, have this functionality. You have to pay a lot for it, though!

Again, I have also seen a few complaints of the Newgy Robo-Pong 2055 getting stuck/jammed from time-to-time. Jamming refers to when a ball gets stuck in the robot and therefore it stops feeding. When this happens you need to go over and fix the issue, perhaps remove the ball, and then start again. Some Newgy Robo-Pong 2055 owners have complained of this problem. It isn’t serious, but it can be annoying.

Finally, I’m pleased to say that the Newgy Robo-Pong 2055 table tennis robot works well with both the old celluloid 40mm balls and the new plastic 40+ ones. For a while, I know a lot of players were worried that the new balls wouldn’t work in their robots due to the small increase in size – but they do. You can read our ball reviews here.

Buy the robot

You can buy the Newgy Robo-Pong 2055 from Amazon or Tabletennis11.com;

The Y&T V-981 is a tabletop robot that is able to deliver every spin (except float/no spin) and can place the ball to one spot or alternate between forehand and backhand. The remote control gives the player control over the speed and frequency of ball delivery.

The following description comes directly from Y&T…

The feature of this model is light and handy. No matter where you go, you can carry it aroundas your personal trainer. 8 different spins. 25-80 balls per minute. 3-30 metres per second. To fixed point or two points on the table. 40 degree adjustable height. Digital display.

And here’s a video of Welsh player and coach Ryan Jenkins demonstrating the features of the Practice Partner 20 robot – a Y&T V-981 clone.

This is a basic table tennis robot that is aimed at new players looking to use a robot for developing simple stroke technique.

The review

The Y&T V-981 table tennis robot is small but quite heavy and very sturdy. It is made of metal (not plastic). This makes it very durable/long-lasting and also allows it to produce a strong amount of speed and spin on the balls it shoots out. Some other tabletop robots are a lot more lightweight and flimsy.

All Y&T robots come with the easy to use rotating spin head. This makes it easy to choose between one of eight different types of spin by simply twisting the mechanism on the front of the robot. I like this way of selecting the spin as it can be changed really easily.

One great bonus to this robot being able to sit on the table is that it means it can deliver balls from lots of different positions. Most robots are fixed and can only shoot out balls from the center of the table. With the V-981 you can place the robot close to the net or right in the corner of the table.

Another great feature of the Y&T V-981 is the ability to practice receiving serves from it. You can angle the robot down so that it shoots the ball into its own side of the table. This is a really cool feature and it’s easy to position the robot and set the spin so that it is identical to receiving serves from the training partner.

Finally, I’m pleased to say that the Y&T V-981 table tennis robot works well with both the old celluloid 40mm balls and the new plastic 40+ ones. For a while, I know a lot of players were worried that the new balls wouldn’t work in their robots due to the small increase in size – but they do.
“Practice Partner” is a brand of table tennis robots found in the UK. If you recognise the range of Practice Partner robots on offer that is because they are actually rebranded Y&T robots from China. The Practice Partner 20 is also known as the Y&T V-981.

Practice Partner 20

Here’s everything you need to know about the Practice Partner 20 table tennis robot…

The Practice Partner 20 is a tabletop robot that is able to deliver every spin (except float/no spin) and can place the ball to one spot or alternate between forehand and backhand. The remote control gives the player control over the speed and frequency of ball delivery.

The following description comes directly from Practice Partner…

Practice Partner 20 is great for home use and school use, it is suitable for all levels of players, it is simple to use and produces topspin, backspin and sidespin with up to 8 variations. The Robot Ball feeding unit is made from alloy with resistant rubber which stabilizes the ball direction. The Robot feeds between 25-80 balls per minute. The Practice Partner 20 has an easy to use control box and can feed the ball to one point and to 3/4 of the table. The robot is mounted on the table surface when in use.

And here’s a video of Welsh player and coach Ryan Jenkins demonstrating the features of the robot.

This is a basic table tennis robot that is aimed at new players looking to use a robot for developing simple stroke technique.

The review

As I mentioned earlier, the Practice Partner 20 table tennis robot is identical to the Y&T V-981 robot. Practice Partner have simply rebranded the Y&T robot for the UK market. Therefore, the review below is copied directly from our Y&T V-981 review…

Buy the robot

You can buy the Practice Partner 20 in the UK from Amazon.

Amazon.co.uk: The Practice Partner 20 is roughly £250-350.

Or why not check out our favourite table tennis robot, the Newgy Robo-Pong 2050. The Robo-Pong 2050 is the top-of-the-range robot from US company Newgy. It is very reasonably priced and can do everything you might want from a table tennis robot.
