Newgy Robo-Pong 1055

Here’s everything you need to know about the Newgy Robo-Pong 1055 table tennis robot…

The Newgy Robo-Pong 1055 looks identical to the Robo-Pong 1040, however, it has a lot more options. It is actually the same as the Robo-Pong 2055 in terms of features – although it is still a tabletop robot.

The following description comes directly from Newgy…

The Robo-Pong 1055 – Newgy’s digital robot for serious table tennis players and recreational ping-pong players. This revolutionary digital robot provides easy precision for ball speed, placement and frequency. Normal Mode gives you simple manual control over each function. Random Mode offers a more unpredictable and challenging experience to keep you on your toes! Drill Mode offers 64 pre-programmed drills for various playing levels and you can also create your own custom drills. Train strokes, footwork, transitions and other skills. Available spins: topspin, backspin, left sidespin, right sidespin, combination spin. Available shot selection: push, chop, serve, counter, lob, fast loop. Head angle adjustments: from low (serves) to high (lobs). Position the robot anywhere on top of the table to get a variety of angles and trajectories. The Robo-Pong 1055 includes Ball Thrower w/oscillation, Ball Bucket with Extender Cage (holds approximately 200 balls for several minutes of non-stop play), Digital Control Panel (6 languages), 4 Dozen 40mm Robo-Balls, Set-Up DVD and Training Manual.

And here’s a promotional video produced by Newgy highlighting the features of this robot.https://www.youtube.com/embed/XuQn5I9PDiE?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&autohide=2&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent

This is an advanced tabletop table tennis robot that is aimed at all levels of players looking to use a robot for developing simple stroke technique and regular footwork.

The review

The digital Newgy Robo-Pong 1055 table tennis robot is a big step up from the analog Robo-Pong 1040.

For starters, it comes with 64 pre-programmed drills. This means that you can actually perform training exercises with your robot instead of simply working on the basic strokes. Modern advanced table tennis robots are increasing transitioning to this computer-style system with memory to remember patterns.

With the Robo-Pong 1055 (and 2055) you are able to hook up your robot to your computer and create drills that way. This is really cool. You are also able to save drills and share/swap them with other players.

The Robo-Pong 1055 also has a random setting that is not available in the cheaper models. This makes playing against the robot a lot more unpredictable and less “robotic”. The Robo-Pong 1055 can randomize the ball speed, frequency, and location. This is very good training for anticipation and adaptability.

The only downside to the Newgy robots is the fact that you can’t pre-program the robot to create different spins in one drill. It would need to be set on topspin or backspin. You can’t have it give you one backspin ball to open up and then a series of topspin balls to counter loop. Some of the more expensive robots, such as the Butterfly Amicus Professional, have this functionality. You have to pay a lot for it, though!

Again, I have also seen a few complaints of the Newgy Robo-Pong 1055 getting stuck/jammed from time-to-time. Jamming refers to when a ball gets stuck in the robot and therefore it stops feeding. When this happens you need to go over and fix the issue, perhaps remove the ball, and then start again. Some Newgy Robo-Pong 1055 owners have complained of this problem. It isn’t serious, but it can be annoying.

Finally, I’m pleased to say that the Newgy Robo-Pong 1055 table tennis robot works well with both the old celluloid 40mm balls and the new plastic 40+ ones. For a while, I know a lot of players were worried that the new balls wouldn’t work in their robots due to the small increase in size – but they do. You can read our ball reviews here.
